Oddy is an AR exploration device that brings children back into nature by reimagining insect collecting through a simple and immersive experience. It integrates three collecting methods and two observing methods into one handheld tool, allowing children to react naturally to outdoor situations through familiar physical actions. A dual camera system works with a ninety degree rotating circular display, aligning the view so insects appear as if they are held directly inside the round screen.
The circular display guides children to focus and look closely, turning ordinary observation into a moment of discovery. Actions such as peeking, adjusting distance, aiming, catching and shaking become part of a continuous flow that mirrors real collecting. When an insect is recognized, Oddy instantly recreates it as a lively AR character, connecting the natural world with a layer of imagination.
Designed to fit the hands of children aged five to eleven, the form and grip support stable handling and safe movement. Oddy encourages children to step outside, explore freely and rediscover curiosity at their own pace, offering a playful alternative to indoor screen based devices.
JUDGES COMMENTS:
--Good overall ID process (storyboard, sketching, modelling, testing, etc) and well-developed result, nice use case, but feels like this could be an app on a tablet and doesn't justify an individual product. What I find compelling is the rigor of design here, strong consideration of product architecture and enclosure design
--The whimsical design of the handheld camera and its ability to generate AR insect characters cleverly bridges physical and digital worlds and would inspire kids to explore nature.
