The year 2037 marks the 100th anniversary of the forced migration of Koryo-saram. In 1937, Koreans living in the Russian Far East were deported to Central Asia—6,500 km away—within only forty days under Soviet policy. “SLOW STEADY 100” is a commemorative project that highlights the endurance, identity, and cultural resilience of a community dispersed and fragmented by history.
At the core of the project lies the metaphor of the turtle and its shell. The expanding growth lines—symbols of longevity, protection, and accumulated life—reflect the generational continuity and vitality of the Koryo-saram people. This metaphor forms the foundation of the visual system, expressing historical persistence and the community’s enduring spirit.
Built on this concept, the project presents three outcomes: the Koryo-saram Newspaper, Oracle Bone–inspired Typography, and a Migration Bag Package. Each element revives and reinterprets endangered aspects of Koryo-saram heritage—language, migration objects, and intergenerational culture—reconnecting what has been fading. It also introduces a system where users can reconstruct and learn Koryo-saram language themselves, fostering direct understanding and cultural continuity.
Ultimately, the work aims not only to remember the past but to establish a lasting foundation that carries Koryo-saram culture into the present and the future.
