With the increasing proportion of older mothers worldwide, attention toward children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has also grown. Children with ASD often experience difficulties in social interaction, sensory processing, and self-regulation, particularly during the ages of 5 to 8, a critical period for the development of these abilities. Music therapy has been widely used as an effective intervention method that encourages sensory stimulation and behavioral engagement.
However, conventional musical instruments often require music reading skills and precise motor control, making them difficult for children with ASD to access and learn. To address this challenge, this product integrates haptic interaction, musical activities, and game-based experiences into a single system. Rather than replicating the physical forms of traditional instruments, it reinterprets the core actions of the accordion, tambourine, and drum into intuitive interactions that are easy to understand and use.
The product consists of three instrument modes. The Tambourine Mode is based on shaking and striking actions, utilizing an IMU sensor and impact sensor to recognize the user’s movements in real time. The Accordion Mode enhances bilateral hand coordination through expanding and compressing motions, implemented using an internal string mechanism. The Drum Mode utilizes target points based on the actual spatial arrangement of a drum set, helping improve concentration and motor control while encouraging active participation through game-based interaction.
In addition, instead of relying on conventional sheet music, the system incorporates game elements that encourage users to complete various missions through repeated movement. This process supports the development of sensory stimulation, rhythm perception, bilateral coordination, and motor control skills.
LUNI is a multisensory music interaction device designed to help children with ASD develop essential abilities through play. By maintaining the therapeutic benefits of music while lowering the learning barriers associated with traditional instruments, it proposes a new and engaging form of music therapy experience.
