Over 1000 years old and one of the most historically and culturally significant cities in China, Xi'an is home to the Qujiang bookstore. Qujiang bookstore spatializes reading and incorporates the book into its space elements. Qujiang bookstore immerses readers in the China’s long history and rich cultural heritage. Designed for this city as a response to changing times, Qujiang bookstore gives expression to the culture of Xi’an, formerly known as the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties. It brings a whole new point of view on reading and revitalizes the style of this ancient city. Qujiang bookstore spatializes reading and incorporates the book into its space elements. Suspended above and illuminating the stairways, Qujiang bookstore’s lighting is evocative of movable type, one of China’s greatest inventions. The stairs themselves are reminiscent of layers of papers, transporting readers into a space for exploring books and a variety of other cultural activities. Qujiang bookstore invites visitors to experience Chinese culture not only through the books it provides but also through the space itself.
