Ecloshell is a sustainable lighting project that creatively repurposes duck eggshells, typically discarded by pharmaceutical companies after yolk extraction, into a unique lampshade material. This project highlights the potential of upcycling natural waste materials in design, transforming an overlooked byproduct into a functional and aesthetically pleasing object. Extensive testing led to the use of thin layers of finely ground eggshell fragments, which proved effective in offering both stability and an intriguing texture. Smaller pieces of brown eggshell were added to introduce a warm, subtle color variation, enhancing the material’s visual depth. The result is a flexible, durable material with a soft, sandy texture that gently diffuses light, creating a cozy ambiance. This careful layering of eggshells provides a natural feel and showcases the texture and warmth of the shells, adding character to the lampshade. Ecloshell demonstrates an innovative approach to sustainable design, where natural waste is upcycled into beautiful, practical objects. The project serves as a reminder of the possibilities within overlooked materials and encourages a mindful approach to material sourcing in design, emphasizing sustainability through reuse and creative transformation.
