THE URN For sea burials in Hong Kong, families board a public ferry to travel to an unmarked location. From the two story ledge of the ferry their loved one’s ashes, contained in plastic bags, drop to hit the water. Our approach to fixing this issue is to design a vessel to reflect the value people have for their loved ones. Its angled, round form influences any user to cradle the urn. The orientation is also clear as the top is smooth to allow for personalization, while the bottom is rough for a better grip. Our choice of white is based in its use during traditional mourning practices in Hong Kong. The urn engineered to allow for an elegant transition into the sea. Once it peacefully leaves the user’s hands, it enters the water with little to no splash. Our urn is thoughtfully engineered to allow its interior cavity to fill in a way that allows for a delayed descent. THE DOCK The design of the dock embraces a sense of peace and unity through its architecture, interface and material choices. The atmosphere of the shared space elicits a humble respect for both the living and the dead. The dock will harbour funerary boats used in ocean burial ceremonies, giving the day of mourning a tangible place to start and end.
