The Moscone Center Expansion and Improvement will increase the capacity of the main driver of San Francisco’s biggest industry, revitalize the public realm, and transform Moscone into North America’s greenest convention center. The project turns the convention center inside out, knitting together disparate buildings, streets, and open spaces to create a vibrant campus. The new building is constructed atop existing facilities and below existing streets without interrupting their operations. It adds 371,000 square feet to Moscone, and expands public open spaces by replacing space for vehicles with space for people. The project will enhance the neighborhood as it grows. Loading ramps and exits will be removed or rearranged, bringing sidewalks and retail frontages to Third Street for the first time in 25 years. This new public realm will weave through the building to existing open spaces. The building’s life is connected to the city by highly transparent circulation spaces which maximize both visual and physical connections. The project is targeting LEED® Platinum and will create less carbon emissions per visitor than any major convention center in North America. It will save over 5 million gallons of water annually, and generate clean energy with the City’s largest rooftop solar array.
