The Carved Stone Towers at the Hub at Austin Bergstrom International Airport
Designer: Larry Speck - Senior Principal
Company / Organization / School: Page
The Carved Stone towers at the Hub at Austin Bergstrom International Airport are an integral part of an expansion project to house new security screening processes for the airport. Set within the new out-bound passenger security screening space, a column-free elliptical grand room, the stone towers house the private screening functions while using their location, mass and volume to help intuitively direct passengers into the secure airport concourse beyond. This contribution to enhancing the passenger experience is further achieved by building on the airport’s legacy of integrated art and architecture. In order to dignify and disguise the private screening functions, the towers are wrapped in locally-sourced, digitally-fabricated, carved limestone surfaces. These panel surfaces, which are carved using CNC technology, are modern interpretations of stone glyphs. They depict our cultural connection to the Central Texas landscape and its watersheds. The story is further explored by representing the original platting of downtown Austin, situated between a pair of creeks that run into the river along the southern boundary of the city. As wayfinding elements, the towers serve to both guide passengers through the space and remind them of the geography they have just visited or call home.
