The NYC Condom is an initiative of the NYC department of Health as an effective measure against HIV infections and unwanted pregnancies. The dispenser is the primary distribution system for the free condom program, distributed and placed around the city beginning Valentine’s Day, 2008. Vaguely reminiscent of a condom shape warped into the surface of one's leather wallet, the NYC Condom Dispenser has the equivalent impact of that of the fire hydrant: immediately recognizable for it’s simple function. The dispenser is mounted to a wall; it dispenses the branded condoms out of a gravity fed interface, reducing part complexity, service and cost. Designing the surface out of a singular stamped metal part through a process known as Hydro forming, makes the dispenser both very durable and low-cost to produce. By designing a dispenser that fits easily into any restaurant, bar or lounge (whether upscale or dive), and homeless shelter and health clinics, design has expanded the notion of prevention into all cultural demographics.
