Design: The solution consists of four primary elements that combine to create a warm and light filled restaurant that performs as a neutral backdrop in which the food can take center stage, but also serves as a narrative to highlight the innovative treatment of traditional barbeque cuisine. 1. CANOPY: Originating from the rear of the dining space, a dynamic undulating ceiling installation literally bridges the gap between old and new before billowing forward to form the entry canopy. The form of the sculpture is evocative of smoke, charred wood, and upon leaving the restaurant, the skeletal remains of one’s dinner. 2. AGRARIAN PALETTE: Inside, the restrained palette of rift-sawn oak and zinc are used to pay homage to the agrarian and pastoral roots of barbeque. These traditionally utilitarian materials are treated with an uncharacteristic level of refinement analogous to that of the menu choices that are so atypical of traditional barbeque. In a similar vein, a traditional wrought iron chandelier is transformed into a modern sculptural showpiece with the application of blood red paint. The combination of warm, honey toned lighting and the specificity of the architectural language brings the palette into an intimate and unique BBQ restaurant.
