Nook is a wireless, connected electronic reading device capable of purchasing, downloading, storing and reading of books and other published reading material in a simple, flexible format. Important to the overall design solution was building the product around the core values of Barnes & Noble. The company, from its very foundation, has always had a strong support of literature, literacy, authors and the celebration of the art form. Therefore, in the creation of their first digital reading device, the product had to be a platform for these admirable values. The idea behind nook’s minimalist design and UI is a focus on content rather than technology. It eliminates all physical buttons and when not in use, the interface disappears, leaving only the actual book on display for enjoyment. One challenge to overcome was the choice of display and input technology. A color touch display was initially desired, but the impact on battery life and possible long-term eye strain of backlighting was an issue. E-ink is the current standard with its low power consumption, high resolution, and reflective nature.
