In emergency care, intravenous access to the bloodstream is essential for administering life-saving medicines, blood, and fluids. In critically ill patients, low blood pressure frequently makes a conventional IV difficult or impossible to place. Emergency personnel can use intraosseus devices which access the bloodstream via the blood vessels in the bones. But these are US$100, complex motor-driven devices. In third-world countries, the $100 is cost-prohibitive. Our bone drill incorporates the helical drive used in a hand-powered push drill, in a robust and low-cost design.
