C5i is a new type of wireless receiver known as a hotspot-to-the-home gateway. It brings broadband Internet service into one’s home without needing cable or fiber optics, which in many parts of the world are unavailable. The unit sticks directly to a windowpane, facing in the direction of a signal transmitter miles away. We designed C5i to be a celestial disc like the sun and moon outside your window. It has a perimeter ring of clear plastic which lights up when sunlight or moonlight pass through it, causing an eclipse-like effect. Seen from outside the window at nighttime the light ring reverses as it is then lit by indoor light. The ring is also a great metaphor for how wireless data is being lassoed by this device.
