Shadow Puppet Book

Winner - Bronze

Competition: Spark:Fall Concept
Designer: Hyoshin Bae
Design Type: Interactive Storybook
Company / Organization / School: KAIST

Shadow Puppet Book is an interactive bedtime storybook that projects moving shadows of the story characters. The storybook characters are magnetically attached inside the book. Holding up the character puppet creates moving shadows of these characters. Shadow Puppet Book brings storytelling out of books and digital screens into the real world. The moving shadows give the impression that the storybook characters are actually living outside of the storybook pages. Shadow Puppet Book is comprised of three elements: book, smartphone, and projector. The book contains detachable character puppets with Augmented Reality(AR) markers attached at the back. They are securely attached in the book with light magnets and are easily detachable. Smartphone camera reads the position and depth information from the AR markers on the character puppets. The projector is connected to the smartphone and projects moving shadow into the real world. Storytelling with Shadow Puppet Book enhances the connection between the parents and children. Reading can be more than just a one-directional parent-to-child interaction. Parents can play shadow puppets with their children while storytelling or create a new story on their own based on the character puppets.
