The Yellow River National Wetland Park connects the emerging North City and Jinan’s old city. It transforms the once isolated “Suspended River” into an accessible park which connects the two cities ecologically, culturally, and economically. The City Balcony, in Phase I of North City, will be the starting point and the catalyst for this connection. Aiming to achieve 100% self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality with renewable energy, the design sets out guidance to transition electricity and heat supply to be fossil-free. It also harnesses the potential for geothermal and solar. New living typologies are further proposed to address climate change through encouraging condenser loops, to share water and energy in a circular way. To sustain the uniqueness of this place, the masterplan seeks to create seven neighborhoods that are genuinely diverse in use and character. It provides for more than 2300 homes, onsite jobs and a mix of services and entertainment, along with civic uses including museum, library, exhibition and education, etc. It also identifies reclamation farmland, to produce food locally, which will remind the new generation that their ancestors once set down roots on the banks of Yellow River.
