Embraced by mountains on three sides and by China largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, to the south, Nanchang is a city of confluence, exuberating richness in landform and topography. However, recent construction along the banks of Poyang Lake and its branch rivers has caused widespread damage, giving rise to frequent summer flooding that separates people from nature. Aiming to alleviate the concerns and restore waterfront habitation, the initial design carefully responds to the unique topography of the land. A verdant valley occupying low-lying land becomes the ecological backbone of the district. Bringing greenery and nature into the heart of city, the banks of Gan River will transform into a community embedded with sustainability and healthy lifestyles. The master plan provides more than 30,000 homes, a VR campus, several cultural programs and 850,000 sqm for R&D and headquarters. New working and living typologies are also proposed to address the undulating topography of the site. Leading with best ecological practices, the proposal sets a precedent for new development in Nanchang city, and will be a catalyst for water-sensitive urban design along the banks of Nanchang and Poyang Lake.
