Recently, the traditional local markets have been facing a challenge in attracting the young generations due to the perception of being old-fashioned and having inefficient layouts. This architectural piece is based on the local traditional market, Bansong Market in Changwon, South Korea, and aims to make it more welcoming and accessible across all generations. It has developed in a way that rearranges and incorporates more user-friendly facilities, encouraging cultural interactions and featuring unique pathways that facilitate the transition from one place to another. Overall, the newly designed ‘Bansong’ market is revitalized while keeping the essence of its authentic retro vibe. By stacking multiple layers on top of the traditional market that previously only used the ground floor, we created more complex pathways. We connected buildings to each other, giving symbolic meaning to communication. Furthermore, this market will serve as a shelter-like space for all citizens, going beyond being merely a place to purchase goods and groceries.
