Mind in Motion is an interactive installation composed of brain-computer interfaces that respond to a growing cultural anxiety: as AI and generative tools automate more aspects of creativity, the boundaries of authorship and originality are increasingly being questioned. This project offers an alternative: creative outputs that are generated from the user’s own brain activity, producing artefacts that are uniquely personal and impossible to replicate. Designed for user engagement without requiring direct control, these interfaces transform subconscious states into tangible souvenirs, shifting the value of creative tools from utility to the symbolic meaning of the outcomes. The series consists of four prototypes, each translating moments of focus and relaxation into creative outputs. 1) Dream Journal generates a stream of nonsensical text that reflects the user’s level of relaxation. 2) Frequent Encounters uses brain activity to tune a radio, producing a shifting audio collage from local stations. 3) Automata transforms the data into evolving bitmap patterns, printed in real time. 4) Wavelet is a marbling device that maps mental states to different colours, with water pumps dripping paints to form fluid, organic patterns. Together, these prototypes invite users to reconsider the boundaries between control and self-expression in the digital age.
