In the post-COVID-19 era, our perception of home has shifted from mere living spaces to protective sanctuaries against external threats like viruses and pollutants, emphasizing the need for clean indoor environments. The CleanGate project introduces an innovative entrance system that not only welcomes but also purifies, acting as a barrier against contaminants carried on clothing and personal items. Outdoor air carries pollutants such as particulate matter—including dust, soot, and pollen—and gaseous pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, which adhere to fabrics. These contaminants can harbor pathogens that remain active on surfaces, posing health risks through secondary exposure. CleanGate combats these issues using a dual approach: an air shower system dislodges particulate contaminants from clothing, while far-UVC light inactivates microorganisms by damaging their DNA and RNA, preventing replication. Additionally, HEPA filters in the system capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles, including PM2.5, although gaseous pollutants require air exchange techniques for removal. The system also includes real-time environmental monitoring to keep residents informed about their indoor air quality, enhancing safety and awareness. CleanGate not only promotes a cleaner living environment but also supports a healthier lifestyle in response to global air quality challenges.
