Ballona Wetlands Field Lab

Winner - Silver

Competition: Spark:Concept
Designer: 2008 Graduating Class Design Team
Design Type: Spaces
Company / Organization / School: Otis College Integrated Learning Lab

A multidisciplinary team of students from The Integrated Learning department at OTIS College of Art and Design, under the direction of (M)Arch. branded architectures, were partnered with the non-profit organization, Friends of Ballona Wetlands (FBW), and asked to design a new Field Lab. The FBW, whose mission it is to ‘Protect, Restore and Educate’, proposed using a donated shipping container as their new Field Lab. The students produced diverse elements of the project, from the mural of the skin of the Field Lab by a fine artist to a cabinetry system by a furniture design student. Together, the students sited the container in the wetlands, considering how it would meet the land with minimal environmental impact. Green materials, both for construction and learning aids, solar power, natural daylight and airflow were paramount when considering how to transform the container into a working lab.
