Designer: Continuum Design Team We designed the Nala chair based on an emphasis on wellness and optimism as well as a sensitivity to the issues that are important to its key users. Nala is a patient chair designed to facilitate and enhance the patient’s transition from the bed to full mobility, while incorporating features that make it easier to use for both the patient and the caregiver. Ergonomically designed, comfortable, yet beautiful patient chairs have been missing in the patient seating category. The challenge for our team was to create a patient chair that emphasized a feeling of wellness and optimism in order to help the patient’s recovery, while delivering on the Herman Miller brand promise of comfort and control. The Nala chair is notable because: • Nala benefits caregiver, patient and hospital administrators • We about the patient/nurse use cycle and incorporated into the chair functional benefits for both • Nala addresses issues important to hospital administrators – it’s easy to clean; is supremely durable for a long life cycle; and it uses many swappable parts to extend its useful life.
