Fifty years after its first publication, Josef Albers’s "Interaction of Color" is widely revered as one of the most influential art books ever written. This iPad app honors and enhances the masterpiece, and was designed to engage and benefit artists and design practitioners across disciplines, arts educators, students, and anyone who wishes to learn more about color. The book’s full text and over 125 original image plates are preserved and enriched with interactive text, plate commentary, over two hours of new and archival video, and seamless navigation among text, plates, and commentary. Many of the plates are interactive, and users can move or lift pieces of the plates in order to experiment with, and better understand, color theory and behavior. A groundbreaking new palette tool allows users to create their own solutions to Albers’s famous color problems. These interactive features were inspired by Albers’s renowned teaching practice of having students work with cut and colored paper. With the Interaction of Color app, users’ favorite colors, palettes, and solutions to color problems can be saved and exported as .svg files. Users’ designs can also be shared via email or posted to Facebook or Pinterest. "Interaction of Color" was created as a classroom teaching tool and has been used continuously in color courses for half a century. In addition to the features that made the book so important and useful, this app provides supplemental material and interactivity for a new way to explore color.
