With the Ellie’s MRI Journey-app, kids (aged 4-8) can be prepared for their MRI-scan at home, so they know what to expect and can be scanned without anesthesia. The gamified app consists of: a child-friendly information movie customized to different hospitals; an interactive game; and an augmented reality module where they can explore a virtual MRI scanner. Undergoing an MRI-scan can be a daunting experience for young children: they have to enter a narrow tunnel in a large machine that makes jarring noises (up to 118 dB), and lie perfectly still for 10 to 40 minutes. Many hospitals use anesthesia to scan pediatric patients, but doing so may carry health risks, is costly (9x as expensive as an awake scan), and increases time spend in the hospital.

JUDGES COMMENTS:

Ellie's MRI Journey, Health Design

"Very laudable idea--MRI procedures can be unsettling for adults and even worse for young children. This program will help kids anticipate the experience in a way that is kid-friendly."

"Clever and fills a need in this environment."

"Thoughtful for the young users from an end-to-end experience, not just in the hospital."
