This project aims to create a space that captures the Client’s deep understanding of Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. Expressive language of the Song Dynasty was comparatively less decorative than of other dynasties – in particular, clothing was restricted to the use of black and white. Elegant and understated, to the point of being “modern” for that era, it underlined the concept that art is made of powerful ideas and concepts as opposed to artistic crafts that are beautiful, decorative, but meaningless. Chinese philosopher Laozi inspired a minimal approach. In one of his most famous poems, Laozi describes a bowl, whose value is in its void so it can contain liquid; or the hub of a wheel, a void centre that connects all the spokes and allows the wheel to spin. The Tao, expressed in the relationship between void and the natural dynamic balance between two opposites, combined with the Song dynasty’s emphasis on arts and its use of black and white, created a dialogue that was powerful, dynamic, and expressive.
